1. Las Vegas, NV
Stay
About the destination: Las Vegas is the biggest city in the U.S. state of Nevada. Often referred to as the Entertainment Capital of the World or Sin City, it is located in the Mojave Desert and is encircled by arid mountains. Las Vegas is globally renowned for its combined casino-hotels and related entertainment. The city is home to numerous mega-hotel complexes, each meticulously decorated to create a fantastical atmosphere. Every hotel has a unique style, with special sights everywhere, and each hotel has its own casino. The majority of the hotel casinos are located in the city's downtown area, along The Las Vegas Strip. The Strip is a world unto itself. Where else can you visit Egypt, New York, Venice, Disneyland, Hollywood, and more all on one street? The truth is that all the action Las Vegas is known for happens on this single street. The Bellagio could be considered the unofficial center of the Strip, partly due to the free musical fountain shows that occur every half hour with varying choreography and music. The Bellagio is one of the more elegant venues with a beautiful flower garden and, for food lovers, it arguably offers one of the best buffets in town. The Venetian is another spot where one might spend more time due to its impressive attempt to recreate Venice in the desert. The main square of Venice is filled with gondolas navigating the water channels and opera singers entertaining their captive audience on board. The opposite end of the Strip, closest to the airport, begins with a humorous depiction of Egypt with its Luxor casino, despite the fact that there are no pyramids in Luxor. But in Las Vegas, anything is possible.

2. Grand Canyon, AZ
Stay
About the destination: Carved by the Colorado River over millions of years, the Grand Canyon is one of the most iconic landscapes on the planet. Stretching 277 miles (446 km) across northern Arizona, its layered cliffs reveal a kaleidoscope of reds, oranges, and golds that change dramatically with the light. Standing at the rim, you’ll look down more than a mile to the river below, with panoramic views that are especially stunning at sunrise and sunset from popular lookout points like Mather Point, Yavapai Point, and Desert View. Most visitors base themselves on the South Rim, home to Grand Canyon Village, where you’ll find historic lodges, visitor centers, restaurants, and easy access to shuttle buses and hiking trails. The Rim Trail offers relatively flat, family‑friendly walks with spectacular views, while the Bright Angel and South Kaibab trails descend into the canyon for more challenging hikes. For a different perspective, consider a guided bike ride, a mule trip, or a helicopter tour, all of which provide unforgettable ways to experience the vast scale of the canyon. The quieter North Rim, open seasonally from roughly mid‑May to mid‑October, offers a more secluded experience with cooler temperatures and dense forests. Here, scenic drives and viewpoints such as Bright Angel Point and Cape Royal showcase sweeping vistas without the crowds. Lodging and services are more limited, so reservations are essential, but the reward is a more tranquil connection with the landscape. A visit to the Grand Canyon is best planned with the desert climate in mind: summers can be extremely hot along the inner canyon, while winter brings snow and icy trails along the rims. Spring and fall offer milder conditions and fewer visitors. Whether you’re stopping for a day or staying longer to hike, raft, or explore nearby Native American sites, the Grand Canyon promises a powerful encounter with the natural world—and a highlight of any trip through the American Southwest.

3. Death Valley National Park, CA
Stop
About the destination: Death Valley National Park, straddling California and Nevada, is a landscape of extremes: the hottest, driest, and lowest place in North America. Far from being a barren wasteland, it’s a dramatic world of salt flats, sand dunes, jagged mountains, and surreal badlands. First-time visitors are often struck by the silence and vastness of the desert, where distances are deceptive and colors shift with every change of light. Begin your visit at Furnace Creek, the park’s main hub, where you’ll find the visitor center, lodging, campgrounds, and essential services. From here, you can easily reach iconic viewpoints like Zabriskie Point at sunrise, when the badlands glow gold and pink, or head to Badwater Basin, 282 feet (86 m) below sea level, to walk among polygon-shaped salt patterns. The rolling sand dunes at Mesquite Flat are perfect at dawn or dusk, when the heat eases and the shadows dramatize the rippling contours. For those with more time—and a suitable vehicle—Death Valley offers outstanding scenic drives and hikes. Artist’s Drive leads to Artist’s Palette, a hillside brushed in pastel shades caused by mineral-rich rocks, while Dante’s View delivers one of the finest panoramas in the American Southwest. Short trails, like the walk through Mosaic Canyon or the Golden Canyon–Gower Gulch loop, reveal narrow marble-lined passages, towering cliffs, and fossilized mud formations. Because conditions can be extreme, planning is essential. Summer temperatures frequently exceed 120°F (49°C); many visitors prefer the cooler months from late fall to early spring. Always carry plenty of water, fuel, and snacks, and check road conditions before venturing onto unpaved routes. With proper preparation, Death Valley rewards travelers with otherworldly scenery, world-class stargazing, and a powerful sense of solitude that is increasingly rare.

6. San Francisco, California
Stay
About the destination: San Francisco is a significant, vibrant, and cosmopolitan city in California. In San Francisco, the past and present merge to provide visitors with a memorable experience. From Mission Dolores, the city's first stone structure, or the city’s iconic cable cars to the technologically advanced Financial District. A journey to San Francisco is sure to leave you with remarkable memories. A boat tour is an excellent way to discover the “City by the Bay.” Explore Fisherman's Wharf, filled with stores, galleries, and restaurants serving tasty seafood. Take a walk along the Golden Gate and enjoy the views of the bay and the Pacific Ocean, visit the various maritime museums, and, of course, no trip to San Francisco is complete without a trip to Alcatraz, the island jail that once housed some of the nation’s most infamous criminals, such as Al Capone. If you're looking for a more laid-back atmosphere, pass through the grand architecture and flowing lagoon of the Palace of Fine Arts. The Transamerica Pyramid has become the city's most recognized landmark. The 260-meter tall pyramid structure is located in the center of the Financial District. Situated between three hills, San Francisco's Chinatown is the largest Chinese community outside Asia, with pagodas, colorful banners, decorated balconies, and Chinese characters blending with the sounds and exotic scents of this captivating area. The Painted Ladies are delightful Victorian wooden homes located on the edge of Alamo Square, and the Haas-Lilienthal House is a well-preserved gem from a past era. San Francisco thrives on diversity and has an infectious energy. This city is enchanting, and everyone should visit at least once.

Stay
About the destination: Maui, often called “The Valley Isle,” blends dramatic volcanic landscapes with lush rainforests and some of Hawaii’s most iconic beaches. At its heart rises Haleakalā, a massive dormant volcano whose summit sits above the clouds. Many visitors make the pre-dawn pilgrimage to watch sunrise from Haleakalā National Park, then explore the alien-like cinder cones and high-altitude trails that stretch across the crater. Later in the day, the park’s lower Kipahulu district reveals a different side of Maui, with waterfalls, coastal views and bamboo forests. Along the west and south coasts, golden-sand beaches frame clear, warm waters ideal for swimming, snorkeling and stand-up paddleboarding. Kāʻanapali and Wailea offer full-service resorts, oceanfront paths and easy access to reefs where you might spot turtles and tropical fish just offshore. In winter, humpback whales migrate through the ʻAuʻau Channel, and boat tours from Lahaina or Māʻalaea Harbor bring you close to these gentle giants. As evening falls, beachside restaurants and traditional lūʻaus combine island cuisine with hula and live music. For a taste of old Hawaii, wander the historic streets of Lahaina (subject to ongoing recovery after recent wildfires; check current conditions before visiting) or head upcountry to the cooler slopes of Kula and Makawao. Here you’ll find farmers’ markets, ranch lands, local art galleries and small eateries showcasing farm-to-table ingredients. Food trucks across the island serve everything from poke bowls and shave ice to inventive fusion dishes, making casual dining a highlight of any stay. No trip to Maui is complete without driving at least part of the famous Road to Hāna. This narrow, winding route along the island’s northeast coast passes dozens of waterfalls, black- and red-sand beaches, and lookout points with sweeping Pacific views. Plan to take it slow, stop frequently, and respect local communities and fragile ecosystems along the way. Whether you spend your time hiking, surfing, or simply relaxing on the sand, Maui’s mix of adventure and tranquility leaves a lasting impression.
